Lesson Plan Handout
Below is my reflection of the sample lesson plan presented during class; you can access the lesson plan handout below the reflection. As you can see, this was a collaborative effort. This lesson plan involved the use of e-portfolios and how those could be used in an ESL classroom. It demonstrates how I can collaborate with another person to promote the learning of our students. We developed the lesson plan together and executed it during class time. The seamlessness of the information in the lesson plan is one example of how well we collaborated. This artifact also demonstrates how a portfolio lesson could be used in an adult ESL classroom as a way for students to monitor their own progress.
I think we did well on organizing our presentation and presenting the material in a way that brings all of the major points together. In addition, I think we demonstrated a way for the other teachers to visualize using a portfolio as an assessment tool in their own classrooms. I think next time it would be better to plan for class discussion. We tried to leave some time, but had not planned on the conversation being so involved. We could have thought of a "Plan B" to use. I was nervous because presenting to your peers is always different than presenting to your students! I think we handled the challenge well. It was also difficult to keep the focus to the readings themselves since the class seemed more interested in their own experiences. This was fine, and I learned a lot from my peers, however, we were less familiar with their experiences than what we had written, so making the connections "in action" was difficult. The most difficult part was finding time to prepare and plan what we would do. It was also difficult deciding how much we should attempt to do and how much time that will take compared with allowing classmates time for discussion. So in general, finding time to do such a large project and deciding how much to include to allow for our classmates' discussion.
I did enjoy the session! It was fun to put it together with Maddy and to work together creatively to come up with our plan. We worked well together--we were each very responsive to emails and communications throughout the planning process which makes it a lot easier! I learned a lot from my peers during discussion. I learned how a teacher can use a portfolio to talk with parents about their child and how students can make portfolios for different reasons: showcasing materials, to show growth, etc.
